Home Page Photo Project

The Paleontological Society welcomes current members to submit original photos to be used as the featured image on the home page of the Society’s website (www.paleosoc.org) through this submission form. Given the beautiful places we work and the interesting fossils that we find and study, we would like to provide our members with the opportunity to showcase their photos.

Logistics and Eligibility

  1. Photos will be deployed on a rotating quarterly basis and will be chosen from submissions from PS members by a committee appointed by the society President.
  2. Photos should primarily focus on a spectacular fossil or assemblage, or you may submit a beautiful outcrop, landscape, etc. that has paleontological significance. Photographs that focus on specific people, rather than rocks or fossils, will likely be less desirable.
  3. Photos should be:
    1. In color; in PNG, JPG, or JPEG format; 2600 pixels wide x 1042 pixels high; and as high-resolution as possible.
    2. When saving your image file, please follow this naming convention: "Lastname_Firstname_YYYYMMDD_Shortdescription"; for example, "Smith_John_20210801_PaleoPhoto".
    3. Available to be cropped as needed to fit the Home Page template.
    4. The image should have sufficient depth of color and contrast to allow white letters to be overlain.
  4. The photos must be the property of the submitter (the photographer) and, if copyrighted, these should be held by the photographer. They should be made available to PS members for educational purposes upon request.
  5. The photographer (and institution, if desired) will be credited. A caption of up to 50 words may also be supplied.
  6. Up to four photos per member will be considered in a given quarterly cycle.

When and How to Submit

Photos are welcomed on a rolling basis. They may be used at any point on the Paleo Society's social media platforms, and one photo will be selected quarterly for the home page (on 1 March, 1 June, 1 September, and 1 December). Submitted photos may automatically be considered in successive quarters without the need for resubmission.
