From the earth to the repository and beyond: fossil collecting and collections issues at every level

Our livelihood as paleontologists depends upon fossils, yet useful, practical information on collecting fossils and researching collections of fossils is widely scattered, often incomplete, and possibly outdated. In addition to promoting education and best practices around these topics, the PS Collections Subcommittee and this Short Course play a significant role in highlighting the many problems of documentation and long-term preservation that existing museum collections face.  Our goal is to generate open-ended discussions on a variety of important, pressing, sometimes difficult topics related to fossil collecting and collections. We invite everyone to participate in this day-long educational short course by listening to half-hour talks, engaging with panel discussions, and participating in group discussions on these important issues.  Registration for GSA is NOT required to participate in the Short Course, if you are not planning on attending GSA in the following days.  Please join us to discuss many, interconnected topics on collecting and collections that are critically important to the vitality of our community.

Date: Saturday, September 21, 2024
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM | Check-in starts at 7:30AM
